Someone's holding a marker, the timer's running, and the “word generator” site everyone pulled up just served “existentialism” to an eight-year-old. Or the opposite: your friend who went to art school got “cat” and won in four seconds. Pictionary lives or dies on the word list, and most lists online are either 100 random words or a wall of nouns with no difficulty label.
This one is 504 pictionary words in eight categories, each split into easy, medium and hard, laid out as tables you can screenshot or print. Under the tables: the rules as they're actually played, a round-by-round timer plan, six variants for two players up to twenty, and the house rules that stop “that's not a giraffe” from becoming a fight. Every word was chosen because it's drawable — the hard ones are hard because they need an idea, not because nobody knows them.
Pictionary rules: how to play (the version people actually use)
- Split into two teams of at least two. (Two-player version below.)
- The drawer picks a word from the list — or the other team picks it for them, which is meaner and better.
- Set a 60-second timer. The drawer draws; their team shouts guesses. No letters, no numbers, no symbols, no talking, no gesturing, no mouthing the word.
- A correct guess before the timer scores 1 point (or 1 / 2 / 3 by difficulty column). Wrong guesses cost nothing.
- Rotate the drawer every turn, teams alternate, first to 15 points (or the end of a set time) wins.
Two rules that need saying out loud before you start: a “sounds like” ear-tug is allowed (draw an ear, then a rhyming word — it's how “Atlantis” gets solved) and the drawer may not add to the drawing after time is called. Decide now whether the other team can steal on a timeout. Our house says yes, one guess.

House rules that stop the arguments
- No letters, numbers or symbols — including arrows that spell things, question marks and “=”. Plain arrows to point are fine.
- The ear-tug means “sounds like” and the drawer may use it once per word.
- Dashes for word count are allowed (three dashes for a three-word title). Debate this beforehand; purists say no.
- Nothing is added after time. The drawer puts the marker down when the timer goes.
- The guess must be the exact word — “kitty” for “cat” is a judgment call, so appoint a judge before you start, not during.
- The drawer cannot say anything, including “yes”, “no”, “close” or a frustrated noise. Nodding is talking.
